The Effect of Precipitation on Variability of Low Stratiform Clouds Over ARM SGP Site
نویسندگان
چکیده
Continental low stratiform clouds cover the sky about 23% of the time during the fall, winter, and spring months and play a significant role in the Earth’ radiation budget. Information about cloud structure and variability is crucial in determining areal averages of cloud radiative and microphysical properties such as over numerical weather prediction (NWP) or Global Climate Model grid cells. Neglecting this variability can lead to substantial underestimates of microphysical process rates (see Pincus and Klein 2000, for example).

Effect of Stratus on Solar Radiation: A Study Using Millimeter Wave Cloud Radar and Microwave Radiometer Data From the Southern Great Plains
Clouds are important players in the global radiation budget with low-level water clouds being one of the most influential types. Classified as stratocumulus and stratus, these water clouds cover 34% of oceans and 18% of land at any given time (Considine et al. 1997). A 50% plus global coverage, a high albedo when compared to the ocean, and temperatures comparable to the surface causes the low s...

[1] Variability of the cloud population in the central equatorial Indian Ocean was observed in the context of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) during the Dynamics of the MaddenJulian Oscillation (DYNAMO) and Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Madden-Julian Investigation Experiment (AMIE) field campaigns. Radar observations from the polarimetric S-band radar on Addu Atoll in theMaldives charac...
متن کاملA microphysical parameterization for convective clouds in the ECHAM5 climate model: Single-column model results evaluated at the Oklahoma Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program site
[1] The microphysical parameterization used for stratiform clouds in the ECHAM5 climate model is now extended for simulations of convective clouds. The performance of the newly implemented parameterization in simulating midlatitude continental summertime convective cloud systems is evaluated in this paper at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program (ARM) Southern Great Plains (SGP) site in...
متن کاملA new cloud and aerosol layer detection method based on micropulse lidar measurements
This paper introduces a new algorithm to detect aerosols and clouds based on micropulse lidar measurements. A semidiscretization processing technique is first used to inhibit the impact of increasing noise with distance. The value distribution equalization method which reduces the magnitude of signal variations with distance is then introduced. Combined with empirical threshold values, we deter...
متن کاملStratiform and Convective Classification of Rainfall Using SSM/I 85-GHz Brightness Temperature Observations
A better understanding of global climate calls for more accurate estimates of liquid and ice water content profiles of precipitating clouds and their associated latent heating profiles. Convective and stratiform precipitation regimes have different latent heating and therefore impact the earth’s climate differently. Classification of clouds over oceans has traditionally been part of more genera...
